Don't buy DVD's Abroad

If you're from the Western Hemisphere, don't buy DVD's in Europe. They are not formatted to work with our DVD players. (So, they don't work!) I'm not sure why, but I'm pretty sure it has something to do with piracy prevention. If anyone knows the technical reason for this, I'm sure some of us are interested. So, feel free to comment below!

  1. DVDs are released on different dates throughout the world. To prevent people buying DVDs in the US to play them anywhere else (where they're not sold), the major companies decided to create that limitation, and the DVD player manufacturers followed.

However, there is no real law about it, since it's a major-company decision, which explains why it is so easy to break the protection, and why you still can find "area 1" stuff sold kind of everywhere in Europe.
