Smart Buy: The North Face Redpoint Quilted Jacket

The best decision I made before leaving for Europe was buying the North Face Redpoint Quilted jacket. It is perfect for both warm and cold whether and it is extremely versatile. During the super cold months, I paired it with my cozy North Face Osito Fleece zip-up. (Seriously, my jacket felt so warm and soft on the inside and was perfect for chilly nights!)

The North Face Redpoint Quilted jacket also has the zip-in feature. Meaning, if you own a larger North Face jacket with the same feature, this one will zip inside it. In addition, the coat is also water and wind resistant. (Note: It is not water-proof, but highly suitable for most of Europe). It also has a hidden pocket in the front, by the main zipper. I found this extremely useful as I was able to stash my passport, cash, etc inside without it being obvious. (Plus, it's proximity to my chest made it a little more pick-pocket safe as I'm pretty sure I would notice if someone tried to get in there.)

While there is no "perfect jacket" for everyone, this is the one I used and was extremely happy with. I almost didn't purchase it before leaving. Although, in hindsight, I don't know what I would have done without it. The jacket's features (especially the extra pocket) made my life so much easier when trying to pack light.

Both of these jackets can be found at www.nordstrom.com.

  1. The only problem I see is the North Face apparel makes it pretty obvious you are American and thus make you more likely to be pick-pocketed in major cities. I hope you don't have any problems with that where you are :)

  2. Yes, it's probably a good indicater. Although, The North Face is very popular where I'm staying in Belgium.

Also, I'm glad you brought the whole "looking American" concept up. It didn't even dawn on me to mention this before but no matter how hard you try people will pretty much know that your American. People tell me, even when I'm dressed the same, that they can see me coming a mile away. I don't even have to speak for it to happen. So, the moral of the story (from my viewpoint) is that it's great to buy stuff to help you blend in better. Afterall, no one wants to be "that person". But if you won't wear it at home, save your money because clothes are like 3 times as much in Europe as they are in the States.

Oh and fortunately, I haven't had any pick pocketing problems where I'm at (knock-on-wood). Although, I'm going to Italy soon... I'll be putting that to the test!

  3. North Face is actually interpreted in the Middle East as making you seem European. Before finding out that I'm American, everyone asks first if I'm from Europe, mainly British first, then German.
